Science & Ayurveda

Ayurveda, in plain English.

A clear-eyed look at the herb at the centre of Stree Sakhi — what modern research says, what tradition has known for centuries, and how the two meet.

01

What is Satavari?

Asparagus racemosus is a climbing shrub native to India and the Himalayas. Its tuberous roots are dried, milled and used in Ayurveda as a rasayana — a deeply nourishing herb, especially for women.

02

Why women?

Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Satavari as supporting artava (the menstrual system) and stanya (lactation). It is traditionally used across every phase — from menarche to menopause.

03

How does it work?

Satavari is considered an adaptogen — a class of plants that may help the body modulate its stress response. Its steroidal saponins (Shatavarins) are the most studied compounds.

What the research suggests

Hormonal modulation

A 2018 review in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology summarised Satavari's phyto-oestrogenic activity and potential role in supporting menopausal comfort.

Preclinical studies indicate Shatavarins may help moderate HPA-axis activity, supporting the body's stress response over time.

Antioxidant activity

Multiple in-vitro studies show meaningful free-radical scavenging in Satavari root extract.

Doshas in 2 minutes

Vata, Pitta, Kapha — without the jargon.

Vata

Air + space. Movement, creativity, anxiety. When out of balance: cold hands, dry skin, racing thoughts.

Pitta

Fire + water. Drive, digestion, intensity. When out of balance: heat, irritability, inflammation.

Kapha

Earth + water. Steadiness, immunity, calm. When out of balance: heaviness, congestion, low motivation.

You are not just one dosha. Most of us are a blend, with one or two leading. Satavari is considered gently cooling and grounding — well-suited to Vata and Pitta imbalances especially.

Tradition + transparency.

Every claim we make is rooted either in classical Ayurvedic text or peer-reviewed research. Every batch we ship is independently tested. That's the standard our sisters deserve.
